Academic Support/Professional Development Grants

 

Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) 

Purpose:  To dramatically improve college readiness and completion in the United States, especially among low-income young adults.  NGLC will accomplish this by identifying proven and emerging technology-enabled solutions and strategies, moving them from “islands of innovation” to greater levels of adoption.

Funder:  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation & William and Flora Hewlett

Applicant: Local educational agencies.

Amount: Up to $300,000 each.

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) New Science Teacher Academy    

Purpose:  To use mentoring and other professional development resources to support science teachers during the often challenging, initial teaching years and to help them stay in the profession. 

Funder: NSTA and Amgen Foundation.

Applicant: U.S teachers entering their second or third year of teaching whose schedule has 51 percent of their classes in middle or high school science. 

Amount: More than $200,000 annually.

American Honda Foundation Grants      

Purpose:  To support youth education with a specific focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in addition to the environment, job training and literacy.

Funder: The American Honda Foundation.

Applicant: Nonprofit charitable organizations classified as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service, or a public school district, private/public elementary and secondary schools as listed by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Amount: Grants range from $20,000 to $75,000.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education    

Purpose:  To promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians at the undergraduate and secondary schools levels.  The program involves partnerships between academic institutions and employers and supports curriculum development; professional development; professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; career pathways to two-year colleges from secondary schools and from two-year colleges to four-year institutions; and other activities.

Funder: The National Science Foundation

Applicant: State educational offices and local schools districts may submit proposals intended to broaden the impact, accelerate the pace, and increase the effectiveness of improvements in science, mathematics, and engineering education in both K-12 and post-secondary levels. 

Amount: $64 million for new and continuing grants.  75 to 90 grant awards are anticipated.

Technology Grants

 

The Lemelson-MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) InvenTeams Program 

Purpose:  To inspire and encourage inventors through InvenTeams, a non-competitive, team-based grants initiative for high school students. 

Funder: The Lemelson Foundation funds the program and (MIT) administers it.

Applicant: Science, math and technology educators at high schools and non-profit educational organizations that have not received an InvenTeam grant within the past three years.  The input of five to fifteen high school students is encouraged for the initial application and required for the final application.

Amount: 15 grants up to $10,000 each.  Funds may be allocated for research, materials, and learning experiences related to project.  Funds may not be used to purchase capital equipment or professional services. 

Deadline: Initial application deadline:  April 6, 2012.  Final application deadline:  September 7, 2012.

School Climate and Safety Grants

 

Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Grant  NEW! 

Purpose: To establish or expand elementary and secondary school counseling programs, with special consideration given to applicants that can:  Demonstrate the greatest need for counseling services in the schools to be served; Propose the most innovative and promising approaches; and Show the greatest potential for replication and dissemination.  The project should: (1) use a developmental, preventative approach, (2) expand the inventory of effective counseling programs, (3) include in-service training, and (4) involve parents and community groups.

Funder: United States Department of Education

Applicant: Local educational agencies (LEAs), including charter schools that are considered LEAs under state law, that do not currently have an active elementary and secondary school counseling grant.

Amount: Minimum award is $250,000 and maximum amount is $400,000.

Arts and Enrichment Grants

 

Challenge America Fast-Track, FY 2013      

Purpose: To support small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations – those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.  Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development.

Funder: The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

Applicant: State, county, city, township, special district governments, independent school districts, institutions of higher education, Native American tribal governments and 501(c) organizations.  All arts education applicants must choose the learning outcome as their primary outcome.

Amount: $10,000 matching grants.

2012 Impact Fund Grant  NEW!      

Purpose: To support youth-serving organizations with the resources they need to get underserved youth connected to the outdoors. 

Funder: Foundation for Youth Investment. 

Applicant: Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax status and public agencies such as school districts.  Grants funds can only be awarded to serve youth that live in a PG&E service area.

Amount: Grants up to $50,000.

WaterSmart Garden Grant Program 

Purpose:   To provide matching funds to community organizations & groups to create and maintain public garden projects that demonstrate the principles of water use efficiency.
Funder: East Bay Municipal Utility District
Applicant: Public Agencies or Non-profit Organizations
Amount: $2,500 to $25,000 depending on the size & type of project

Baseball Tomorrow Fund Grant    

Purpose:   To promote and enhance the growth of youth participation in baseball and softball throughout the world by funding programs, fields, coaches’ training, and the purchase  of uniforms and equipment to encourage and maintain youth participation in the game.  Grants are designed to be sufficiently flexible to enable applicants to address needs unique to their communities.

Funder: The Baseball Tomorrow Fund (BTF) is a joint initiative between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Applicant: Non-profit and tax-exempt organizations involved in youth baseball and softball programs in both rural and urban communities.

Mini-Grants

“American the Beautiful” Essay Contest  NEW!

Purpose:  To inspire students to appreciate what makes our country great and to use their writing skills to share with others stories about those places that are special to them.  We want to know what they love about their hometown or a place where the experienced a special memory or what landmarks in our country inspire them.

Funder: Rand McNally and USA Today

Applicant: Students in grades 7 – 12.

Amount: The grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 college scholarship.  Student winners from each state will win a Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet.  Teacher whose classrooms participate in the program have the opportunity to win $5,000 worth of products for their schools.

13th Annual Brower Youth Awards       

Purpose: To recognize the outstanding leadership efforts of young people who are working for the protection of our shared planet and to honor renowned environmental advocate, David Brower. 

Funder: Earth Island Institute

Applicant: Young activist leaders ages 13 to 22 living in North America.

Amount: Each of the six recipients of the Brower Youth Awards will receive a $3,000 cash prize, a professionally produced short film about their work, flight and lodging accommodations for a week long trip to the San Francisco Bay Area for leadership activities and the awards ceremony.

Avery-Fuller-Welch Children’s Foundation Grants     

Purpose:  To provide grant funding for early intervention and professional guidance to children with physical, behavioral, emotional and learning challenges.

Funder: The Avery-Fuller-Welch Children’s Foundation

Applicant: Providers serving low-income families with children (22 years of age or younger) with a remediable disability.  The selection is based upon:  evidence of a strong motivation in the child, the therapist, and the family; favorable prognosis for achieving independent functioning or significant progress towards the goals set forth within the date parameters of the grant period; and inability to pay or obtain full support elsewhere.  Eligible services include:  remedial education/tutoring, speech therapy, psychotherapy/counseling, and occupational/physical therapy.

ING Run for Something Better Nation School Awards Grant 

Purpose:  To empower school age children nationwide with the means to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle and foster their desire to exercise before obesity ever begins by establishing a school-based running program or expand an existing one. 

Funder: Ing Corporation & the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE)
Applicant:  Grades K-8 With at least 25 students participating.
Amount: Minimum award is $1,000 and maximum amount is $2,500.

MathMovesU Grants for Teachers and Schools  NEW!

Purpose:  To recognize excellence in math teaching.  If you know someone who is an effective math teacher, math coach or math even coordinator; someone who uses creativity in teaching or coaching math skills, we want to know about it!  Nominate a Math Hero!

Funder: Raytheon

Applicant: Nominees must be full-time teachers who are currently employed and teaching a mathematics curriculum at a middle school or high school or volunteers working with an approved math-related nonprofit organization.

Amount: $2,500 to the Math Hero recipient and a matching award of $2,500 will be granted to the school where each recipient is employed or to another approved math-related nonprofit organization of the recipient’s choice.

Action for Healthy Kids Schools Grants for Health Kids  NEW! 

Purpose:   To promote school wellness programs focusing on school breakfast, summer feeding, competitive foods, and access to healthy foods.  The following grants are available: 

·         School breakfast program creation and/or expansion

·         Summer feeding program creation and/or expansion

·         Providing healthier foods in competitive food venues like vending machines, etc.

·         Providing access to healthy foods through taste testing, nutrition education lessons, and food curriculum enhancements.

Funder: Kellogg’s and the Walmart Foundation

Applicant: Schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program and have a free/reduced priced meal eligibility greater than 50%.  Priority selection will be given to schools with student enrollment greater than 500 students.
Amount: Funds range from $1,000 to $5,000 with the average being $2,000.

The Candace S. Bos Innovative Project Grant Program    

Purpose:  To help teachers and support personnel of students with learning disabilities develop creative projects that enhance instruction, curriculum, action research and service delivery.

Funder: The Division for Learning Disabilities (DLD) which is one of the entities comprising the Council for Exceptional Children.

Applicant: Teachers, students, and support personnel.  Applicants must be member of DLD.  Grant funds may be used to purchase equipment or provide field trips, as long as they are a component in a well-planned unit of instruction.

Amount: Grants range from $100 to $1,000.

The ASM Foundation “Living in a Material World” Grants    

Purpose:  To help K-12 teachers bring the real world of materials science into their classrooms and to provide support and incentive for K-12 teachers to develop and implement science-teaching activities.

Western Grower’s Foundation 2012 School Garden Grant  NEW! 

Purpose:  To create an edible garden in every willing California and Arizona school.

Funder: Western Growers Foundation
Applicant: California and Arizona schools (K-12) that support nutrition education through edible gardening projects.

Amount: Up to $1,500 each to be used for supplies needed to grow and harvest a fruit and vegetable garden (wood, nails, soil, fertilizer, raised beds, irrigation, garden tools, edible plants, fruit trees, etc.).

Purpose:  To provide all children with an education that will allow them to reach their greatest potential and prepare them to participate in a nation and economy that continues as a global leader.  Three types of grants for K-12 public schools are funded: Teacher Development, Service-Learning and Systemic Improvement.

U. S. Bancorp Foundation Grants  NEW!

Purpose:  To contribute to the strength and vitality of our communities by supporting organizations that:  improve the educational and economic opportunities of low- and moderate-income individuals and families and enhance the cultural and artistic life of the communities in which we live and work.  Regarding education, they support innovative programs that help low-income and at-risk students succeed in school and prepare for post-secondary education, financial literacy training and effective mentoring programs.

The Independent Educational Consultants Association Foundation  NEW!

Purpose:  To recognize and sustain programs that have a positive impact on students and their educational lives; help students be more knowledgeable and rational in their educational choices; and encourage students to believe that everyone has potential and is capable of great things.

The JW & HM Goodman Family Foundation Grants  NEW! 

Purpose:   To improve the quality of life in the San Francisco Bay and Portland, Oregon areas.  The focus areas for the fall grant cycle are the Environment or Health & Human Services.  The foundation is focused on improving access to affordable healthful food through:  community and school gardens, farm to school programs, nutrition and cooking classes for low-income populations, and healthy corner store initiatives.

American String Teachers Association (ASTA) Special Project Grants        

Purpose: To enhance the future of string teaching and playing by providing the resources needed to bring string playing and teaching to more children.

Funder: The American String Teachers Association (ASTA)

The National Education Association (NEA) Foundation Grants      

Purpose:  To improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area(s).  The proposed work should engage students in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter.

Funder: The National Education Association.

Applicant: Public school teachers in grades prek-12; public school education support professionals; or faculty and staff at public higher education institutions.  Preference given to members of the NEA.  Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with honors, advanced placement, or other challenging curricula are encouraged.

Amount: $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study.

The National Weather Association’s Sol Hirsch Education Fund Grant    

Purpose:  To help improve the education of students, school and/or community in the science of meteorology. 

Funder: The National Weather Association

Applicant: K-12 teacher/educators. 

Amount: Up to seven $750 grants each school year.

Fuel Up To Play 60 

Purpose:  To encourage the availability of and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, along with at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity.
Funder: The National Dairy Council and the National Football League.
Applicant: K-12 schools enrolled in the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program.

Amount: Up to $4,000 per year.  Funds will be distributed after June 30 and count toward the school’s funding for school year 2012-13.

High School Equestrian Athlete Grant Program    

Purpose:   To recognize students in grades 9-12 who participate in local high school equestrian clubs and teams.  Awards are also provided to the clubs and teams.
Funder: The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF)

Applicant:  Students must be current USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program participants and be a member of at least one USEF Recognized Breed/Discipline Affiliate or International Affiliate Association.  Applicants must submit a 500-word essay that answers questions from USEF about their experiences in the program.
Amount: A total of $20,000, with $1,000 grants to students.  Ten $500 grants given to the clubs or teams with the most student participation in the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program.

The American Society of Plant Biologists’ (ASPB) Education Foundation Grants      

Purpose:  To support education and outreach activities that advance knowledge and appreciation of plant biology.  Among programs it supports are those that improve the range of knowledge of school children by increasing the focus on plant science in K-12 curriculum by developing curriculum materials, teacher development, and hands-on learning materials.

Funder: ASPB

Applicant: ASPB members from both within and outside the U.S. 

Amount: Grants up to $30,000.  If proposals do request the full $30,000 budget, it is encouraged to leverage funds from ASPB with support from other sources.

The Comerica Charitable Foundation Grants  NEW!

Purpose:  To support programs and initiatives that address key issues in communities where the company has operations.  Education is one of their giving priorities.  This includes:  Financial literacy programs (k-12 and adult) and scholarships for students with income needs for studies in business, finance and growth industries.

Applicant: Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in communities where Comerica does business.

The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation (LLCF) Library Grant Program  NEW!

Purpose:  To help purchase books for preK-12 young people at rural and urban public and school libraries serving at-risk children.  Funds are not intended for administrative or operational use.

Applicant: PreK-12 students.

Amount: Previously awarded grants have ranged between $500 and $3,000.

California Fertilizer Foundation School Garden Program  NEW! 

Purpose:   To increase California children’s understanding and awareness of agriculture through school gardens, and, in so doing, enhance existing curriculum and goals in the classroom.  Funding is for continuation and/or implementation of in- and after-school garden programs.  Pre-schools, colleges and community gardens are not eligible for this grant.

Funder: California Fertilizer Foundation
Applicant: Public and private K-12 schools.

Amount: $1,200 each.  Winners can re-apply for a progress grant of $1,500 and a free agricultural field trip.

Champion Creatively Alive Children Grant Program 

Purpose: To support art-infused education which teaches children the four C’s – communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity – skills they need to understand our increasingly interconnected world and thrive as 21st century citizens.

Funder: Crayola and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. (NAESP)

Applicant: The application must be submitted by an elementary school principal in the United States or Canada, who is an NAESP member and intends to be an NAESP member during the 2011-2012 school year.  If the principal is not a member they can sign up now. 0

Amount: The school will receive a $2,500 grant to implement the project and $500 work of Crayola products.

The Lego Children’s Fund 

Purpose:  To provide support for:  early childhood education and development that is directly related to creativity; and technology and communication projects that advance learning opportunities.

Purpose:  To find high-achieving K-12 schools whose best practices and outstanding results can inform other schools in their school improvement efforts.

National Italian American Foundation Italian Language Grants  NEW!

Purpose:  To foster the development and implementation of programs in schools, organizations and communities that encourages the teaching and practice of the Italian language.

Pets in the Classroom Grants      

Purpose:  To help elementary school educators teach children to bond with and care for their pets responsibly.  The grants reimburse teachers for the cost of purchasing a new classroom pet and supplies.  Sustaining grants are available to reimburse teachers with existing classroom pets.

Funder: The Pet Care Trust.

Applicant: PreK-8 grade classrooms.

Purpose: To create and support school theatre programs, generating positive opportunities for students and giving them a place to shine.  Theatre allows children to involve themselves in an experience that brings growth, maturity, teamwork and responsibility – qualities that are relevant to all aspects of life.

Applicant: Applicant must be a current (as of October 15) full individual or e-member of NCTM or teach at a school with a current NCTM K-8 school membership; and currently teach mathematics in grades 6-8 at least 50 percent of the school day.

7-12 Classroom Research Grants  NEW!

Purpose:  To support and encourage classroom-based research in precollege mathematics education in collaboration with college or university mathematics educators.  Proposed projects may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Curriculum development & implementation; Involvement of at-risk or minority students; Students’ thinking about a particular mathematics concept or set of concepts; Connection of mathematics to other disciplines; Focused learning and teaching of mathematics with embedded use of technology; and Innovation assessment or revaluation strategies. 

Funder: The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) along with the E. Glenadine Gibb Fund.

Applicant: Educators currently teaching mathematics at grades 7-12 who are current (as of Oct 15) full individual or e-member of NCTM or teach at a school with a current NCTM membership.  The college or university mathematics educator must be a member of the NCTM. 

Amount: Grants up to $6,000.

  • Congratulation to the Mt. Diablo CARES After School Program who recently received a Summer STEM from Partnership for Children and Youth and Chevron for $105,000.  The Summer STEM Science project would serve five elementary sites which include; Cambridge, Delta View, El Monte, Fair Oaks and Ygnacio Valley Elementary schools. Sites will provide at least 90 minutes of science activities per day, as well as physical activity, meals, and other summer camp enrichment activities during the summer program.
  • Congratulations to Riverview Middle School who received a Target Field Trip grant for $700. The grant will take 150 students to three museums in San Francisco and Oakland. The three museums include The Mexican Museum, De Young Museum, and the Oakland Museum of Art. Riverview Middle School Art Teacher, Annemarie Baldauf hopes to utilize the field trip as a way to integrate course content and provide students with an enriched opportunity and experience.
  • Riverview Middle School also received a $3,930 Dow Chemical Foundation Community grant to implement the After School Robotics Enrichment Program. Riverview Middle will use the Lego MINDSTORMS materials to implement the Robotics Program to provide student exposure and access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. The Robotics Program will be implemented during the existing Mt. Diablo CARES After School Program which currently serves 110 students each day. The grant will be used to purchase a class set of the Lego MINDSTORM materials.
