PERTUSSIS Information
Attention Parents and Guardians:
Thank you to parents who have already provided their child’s updated immunization
records.
For the 2011-12 school year, a new State law, AB 354 now requires that
all incoming 7th-12th graders get a whooping cough booster shot, called Tdap.
As pertussis continues to occur at high levels in California, unimmunized adolescents
remain at risk of becoming ill, missing school and spreading pertussis to their fellow
students, households and communities. CDPH urges schools, health care providers,
and the public to continue their efforts to protect students against pertussis this
summer.
If they haven’t already, parents should make sure their children have been
immunized and submitted their shot records to school as soon as possible before
school starts to keep them healthy and in the classroom - check with individual
schools for details.
We encourage you to contact your child’s doctor now to schedule an immunization
appointment. Some children may qualify for free immunizations through the Vaccines
for Children Program.
Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is widespread throughout California. This
vaccine can help keep your child and family protected.
Thank you.

Gracias.
Distrito Escolar Unificado de Mt. Diablo
We believe that healthy children learn better and support
student wellness.
Credentialed school nurses in the Mt. Diablo Unified School
District work to complete State mandated screenings for
hearing, vision, and scoliosis. We notify parents of incomplete
mandated requirements for immunization compliance, school
entry physicals and a dental exam for all Kindergarten
students.
Our school nurses review physician orders for medications in
the schools. For students with medical issues, we obtain/write
student health assessments upon request, for IEP and 504's
that has a medical basis.
Our school nurses provide consultation for communicable
disease issues/outbreaks, and may review student attendance
related to medical issues. We serve on the School Attendance
and Review Board and provide representation at the Community
Action coalition meetings. (SARB & CAC).
School nurses have provided in-service education and
consultation to school staff/students regarding chronic medical
conditions.
