Information About Board Action on High School Feeder Pattern and Enrollment

The Mt. Diablo Board of Education recently approved a feeder pattern for students residing in the Diablo View/Pine Hollow attendance area which allows them to select any of the five comprehensive high schools as their home high school, as they currently do not have a designated high school. This takes into consideration classroom space and classroom size beginning with this year’s 7th grade students.  See http://mdusd-ca.schoolloop.com/file/1451351504945/1451351450035/6282743045174785307.pdf

The parents of current 8th grade students who reside in the Diablo View/Pine Hollow attendance areas were sent a letter requesting they select their student’s high school for next year.  While the selection forms are still being collected by school counselors, of the 115 forms returned so far, 45 families are choosing Northgate and 60 families are choosing other high schools. The parents of current 7th grade students will receive their letter in spring.

Families in the resident areas will NOT be a part of a lottery.  Some families have expressed concerns to the district that if more students from Pine Hollow and Diablo View opt to choose Northgate High School as their destination high school that the high school’s entire enrollment would be subject to a lottery. This is not the case. Should more students from these two attendance areas choose Northgate, other intra-district transfers would be limited.  It should be noted that enrollment at Northgate High in the last three years has gone down.

Foothill Middle has approximately 1,000 students from within the feeder pattern attend Northgate High School. An additional 300-600 students generally transfer from elsewhere to Northgate.  If current trends remain consistent, about 100 of those transfer students come from Clayton. Past historical data show that Clayton students tend to enroll at the charter high school, rather than transfer to a non-neighborhood school; however, students have opted for enrollment at all comprehensive high schools.

‚ÄčThe Board’s recommendation was based on historical data regarding Clayton student transfers. If, in the future, a majority of students opted out of Clayton Valley Charter, then the district would need to revisit the feeder pattern to address this.
