WHAT: Mt. Diablo Unified School District’s Community Speaker Series

BACKGROUND: MDUSD is pleased to provide its Community Speakers Series as an activity to support goals of the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). As part of the key goal for Parent/Family & Community Engagement, parents, families and community members will be informed, engaged, and empowered as partners with MDUSD to support student learning. See the LCAP at a Glance to learn more.
Our series continues next Wednesday, January 18, with “Marijuana & Beyond: Teen Drug Use in 2017”, presented by Dr. Danielle Ramo, an Assistant Professor and licensed psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Francisco. Dr. Ramo directs the Research on Addictions and Digital Interventions lab which explores the use of digital media to change health risk behaviors including tobacco, alcohol, and other drug involvement. Funded with a K23 Career Development Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Dr. Ramo has developed the Tobacco Status Project social media intervention to help young adults quit smoking, and is testing its efficacy in a randomized clinical trial with 500 young adults. Additional studies are examining patterns and toxicology of electronic-cigarette use in adolescents and tobacco and marijuana co-use in young adults.
Dr. Ramo has an interest in prevention of substance use disorders in young people. To this end she serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Being Adept prevention intervention program helping to design curriculum and speaking to teens, parents, and school administrators throughout the East Bay/Bay Area about adolescent substance abuse.
The event will be held at Concord High School, 4200 Concord Blvd., beginning at 6 p.m. All MDUSD families and staff are welcome. Translation services will be provided. For more information call (925) 682-8000, ext. 4016.
