Future Bond Measure
Aging Schools Require Urgent Repairs and Upgrade
Many MDUSD schools were built decades ago and are in need of repair and upgrade. Some students learn in outdated classrooms that don’t support modern instructional methods; air conditioning, heating, and electrical systems frequently break down, and some school facilities contain asbestos and other hazardous materials.
To ensure MDUSD students have the tools they need to be successful in college, the workforce, or future careers, and so they can learn in safe, up-to-date environments, the District is considering placing a local school facility improvement measure on the November 3, 2026
ballot. While no final decisions have been made, the measure currently under consideration would provide $529 million in locally controlled funding and cost $38 per $100,000 of assessed value — not market value — annually.
Local funding could support priority school improvements, including:
- Removing hazardous materials like asbestos from older school sites
- Ensuring clean, safe drinking water at every school site
- Updating math, science, and engineering labs and technology
- Improving safety and security systems
- Providing up-to-date career technical education to ensure students are prepared for college and careers
- Upgrading outdated and inefficient heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
Fiscal Accountability and Local Control
To ensure transparency, the potential measure would be subject to the following accountability measures:
- All funds would be controlled locally and could not be taken away by the State
- By law, money could not be used for administrators’ salaries or benefits
- An independent citizens’ oversight committee and mandatory annual audits would ensure all funds are spent as promised
- A detailed project list outlining the specific use of funds would be required
