Key Components of Our Pest Management Approach:

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
MDUSD adopts an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy to minimize the use of pesticides and focus on preventive measures. IPM emphasizes regular monitoring, sanitation, sealing of potential entry points, and using non-chemical methods wherever possible to reduce pest risks.
  • Prevention and Maintenance
Preventive measures are implemented by our maintenance teams to keep pests at bay. This includes:
    • Regular cleaning and waste management
    • Proper food storage
    • Sealing cracks and openings to prevent pests from entering
    • Ongoing inspections of school facilities to identify potential pest problems early
  • Professional Pest Control Services
For more specialized treatments, we work with licensed pest control companies that apply pesticides or use other pest management techniques in strict accordance with district policies, health regulations, and safety standards.
  • Compliance with Regulations
MDUSD complies with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding pest management in schools, including the California Healthy Schools Act. This law mandates that parents, students, and staff be notified before the application of certain pesticides. We ensure all pesticide use follows the guidelines set forth by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation to protect the health and safety of everyone on campus.
  • Record Keeping and Transparency
To ensure compliance and transparency, detailed records of pest control activities—including inspections, treatments, and pesticide applications—are maintained. This helps us stay accountable and meet health and safety standards.
  • Response to Pest Infestations
In the event of a pest infestation, our district takes prompt action to address the issue while prioritizing the health and safety of everyone on campus. This may involve immediate pest control measures, temporary relocation of students or staff, and ensuring the problem is fully resolved.
