This course is the first in a 3 year series involving the investigation of body systems, health conditions and related careers. Students will solve real world problems while exploring medical treatments, life-style choices and research processes. Students investigate the human body systems and various health conditions including: heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. This course is designed to provide the scientific foundation for the subsequent courses (Human Body Systems and Medical Interventions). Most students who enroll in this class are interested in health careers. Lab fee donations are requested.

This is the second of the 3 year series investigating the integration of the body systems, health conditions and related careers. Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases and often play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries

This is the final class of the 3 year series investigating the integration of the body systems, health conditions and related careers. Students investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the life of a fictitious family. The course is a “How-To” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body. Students explore how to prevent and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through these scenarios, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

Description: This course covers the basic terminology for Allied Health exploratory students. It covers the most common word parts, from prefixes, word roots, and combining forms and suffixes for all the human systems. Abbreviations, acronyms, antonyms, and synonyms are addressed. Anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnostic, and the most common therapeutic procedures are also included in this course. Prognosis and rehabilitation techniques are fully described using the correct terminology for students with no previous knowledge of these topics. Basic pharmacology for health-related careers in general is also included.

Description: The course begins with basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, first aid, CPR, data collection, and safety practices and ends with a thorough understanding of medical emergencies. The course presents the tools for students to understand the importance of prehospital care and delivers a thorough understanding of the proper use of medical equipment necessary to provide appropriate care. The competencies in this course are aligned with the National Standard Curriculum, Common Core State Standards, and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards. There is also an emphasis on college and career readiness skills such as team work effective communication, professionalism, and medical ethics.

Course Description:
This course is designed to explore human anatomy and
physiology, and lays the foundation for further study of these sciences. Students learn how systems of the body function and interact through physical activity, and develop a thorough understanding of the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. This knowledge serves as a platform for understanding the physiological response to injury and improving performance. Students taking this class may be eligible for an after-school sports medicine practicum with the school’s athletic teams. Integrated throughout the course are career technical education standards which include basic academic skills, communication, career planning, technology, problem solving, safety, responsibility, ethics, teamwork, and technical knowledge.

Course Description:

Sports Medicine II builds on the skills learned in Sports Medicine, focusing on practical application and advanced first responder skills. Students explore advanced concepts in biomechanics, kinesiology, and the physiological adaptations to exercise, injury, and rehabilitation. Students delve deeper into how body systems interact dynamically during physical activity and are introduced to advanced diagnostic techniques and treatment protocols for common sports-related injuries. The course emphasizes the role of the nervous and cardiovascular systems in optimizing athletic performance and recovery.

Eligible students may participate in an immersive after-school practicum, working alongside athletic trainers and medical professionals to support the school's athletic teams, gaining hands-on experience in sports medicine practices and reinforcing professional readiness for careers in the field.

This course covers the basic Medical Terminology for Allied Heath exploratory students. It covers the most common combined forms, prefixes, word  roots and suffices for all body systems 

The purpose of this class is to help student to make educational/career decisions. This course prepares students with a foundation to understand and use medical terminology.

Assignments and labs in this course are aligned  with CTE Health Science and Medical Technology Standards.
