AAC Tool Kits

 

AAC toolkits have been rolled out across MDUSD to SDC classrooms that historically serve students who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or inconsistently speaking. These toolkits are designed to increase communication and participation in the classroom for students who communicate in ways that differ from traditional speech. They also provide valuable information to support AAC assessments and reviews. Teachers and their supporting SLPs are required to complete an AAC toolkit training prior to receiving a toolkit.

 What can we do with them? 

  • Choice making
  • Social scripts
  • Literacy activities
  • Promote activity-specific language
  • Social engagement- including gaining attention, turn taking, etc
  • Build communication-rich and friendly environments

What comes in the kits?

There is some variety in tool kits based on the needs in each classroom, but tool kits generally include:

  • Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAS)
  • Activity Supports
  • Core Boards , (Spanish, playground) 
  • Accessibility Tools
  • Classroom-based iPad with Communication app.

*Please note that iPads are rolled out after a teacher has implemented the low and midtech equipment in the classroom, and attended a classroom iPad training).

  • Please submit ticket INSTEAD or BEFORE of an email
  • Please include your SLP/Casemanager on the ticket
  • We are almost always going to reply with: “Set up an AAC Problem Solving” meeting-send us a calendar invite.
  • We MUST have a problem-solving meeting BEFORE the IEP
  • TIS has sent your administrators training resources for incident IQ

Tool Kits will be distributed after both the teacher AND the speech pathologist have attended the training.
