Aided Language Modeling

Aided language modeling:

(also called aided language stimulation) is an evidence-based strategy used to teach individuals how to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.

In this approach, a communication partner (like a therapist, teacher, or parent) speaks their message while simultaneously pointing to or selecting symbols, pictures, or words on the AAC user's communication system. This method of teaching AAC is considered best practice 

All languages are learned through modeling. AAC users must be immersed in their communication system to learn how to use it. Aided language modeling provides a visual and physical demonstration of how symbols match spoken words, which helps build both receptive (understanding) and expressive (speaking) language skills
